King Overman is a British artist making large-scale portraits of people who shape and inhabit modern mythology. Subjects include athletes, musicians and everyday sitters.
His life-size paintings of basketball icons (Hardwood Army) have been exhibited at Brooklyn Museum in New York and are held by collectors including Spike Lee and NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins. In 2022, he was commissioned by the Masters in Augusta to create a life-size portrait of golf legend Jack Nicklaus.
Overman has been working as an artist since 2021, after serious illness ended a twenty year career in electronic music. Ongoing health challenges have shaped his visual language- in particular using large colour blocks and simplified forms, enabling ambitiously large works despite having limited energy. He also finds inspiration in classical portraiture, fashion photography and the colour palettes of street art.
His work has also resonated online, with social media posts reaching millions of views. He documented these first few years in art for his 2022 monograph, Ballers.
King Overman lives and works in Manchester, UK.
